Smart Tunnel — Solving a 10-Year Problem
How we replaced seven routers at KL’s Smart Tunnel control centre and fixed a routing issue that had defeated everyone for a decade.
Client environment: Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran (JPS) — Kuala Lumpur’s Smart Tunnel control centre · Scope: router replacement and network routing remediation · Role: Head of Network · Year: 2023
The Challenge
Kuala Lumpur’s Smart Tunnel is a critical piece of national infrastructure — a stormwater and road tunnel whose control centre watches over flood gates, traffic and life-safety systems around the clock. Its network, however, carried a ten-year-old wound: a routing issue between the government’s GITN network and the BFWA wireless infrastructure that had never been solved. Successive contractors had patched around it; the underlying problem stayed.
On top of that, all seven routers serving the tunnel’s control points were due for replacement — seven opportunities for something to go wrong in a facility that cannot afford a blind minute.
The Solution
- Full router replacement — all seven routing points replaced with a clean, documented configuration baseline.
- Root-cause routing remediation — instead of patching symptoms, we traced the decade-old GITN/BFWA routing conflict to its source and resolved it properly.
- Zero-drama cutover — planned and executed so the control centre never lost its picture of the tunnel.
The Outcome
JPS closed the project with a 100% satisfaction record — including confirmation that their ten-year-unsolved routing problem was finally gone. It is the kind of result we like best: not a ribbon-cutting, but a problem that stays solved.
Inheriting a network problem nobody has been able to fix? That is exactly our line of work.
