Sarawak Metro — Kuching ART System

Project System Lead for the IT systems of Malaysia’s first Autonomous Rapid Transit lines.

Client: Sarawak Metro — Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) · System: Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), Blue Line (Line 1) and Red Line (Line 2) · Role: Project System Lead, ITS package · Timeline: 2022 – 2027 (estimated service opening) · Status: design stage (Preliminary Design Review workshops)

The Challenge

The Kuching Urban Transportation System is Malaysia’s first Autonomous Rapid Transit deployment — trackless, digitally-guided vehicles running on city streets. Behind every ART vehicle sits an Information Technology System (ITS) that has to be designed from zero: communications, surveillance, control interfaces, stations, depots and the operations centre, all specified for a transport mode with no local precedent.

First-of-kind projects carry a particular risk: nobody can copy the last one. Every design decision — from network topology to station systems integration — sets the pattern the system will live with for decades.

The Scope

Our ITS package scope covers the full engineering lifecycle for both lines:

  • Design and engineering of the complete Information Technology System;
  • Procurement, manufacture and assembly of system components;
  • Supply and delivery to site;
  • Installation, testing and commissioning;
  • Handover of a fully operational ITS for the Blue and Red lines.

Where It Stands

As Project System Lead, Priority Solution has been on the programme since 2022, currently deep in the design stage with Preliminary Design Review workshops — the phase where good architecture saves years of pain later. It is the same discipline we applied at KLIA and the Smart Tunnel, now applied to the future of public transport in East Malaysia.
